Amazon to create 600 jobs at first Manchester office

Tech giant Amazon has opened a new 90,000 sq ft office in Manchester – the first time it has invested in corporate UK premises outside of London.

Amazon.com Inc plans to fill six floors of the 1907-built Hanover Building with 600 new jobs, including software developers, scientists and branding specialists.

The firm has already begun hiring, with a first wave of 19 roles now being advertised at the Grade II-listed building, located in a trendy bar district close to Manchester Arena.

Additionally, Amazon pledged to celebrate its arrival in Manchester by launching a new Future Engineer Bursary to support undergraduates from low-income backgrounds studying computer science at the University of Manchester.

Doug Gurr, UK Country Manager for Amazon said: “I am delighted we’re opening our first corporate office in the North of England.

“Manchester offers an incredible talent pool, a thriving hub of fast-growing UK tech start-ups and is a centre of academic and intellectual excellence.

Amazon now employs around 29,500 people in the UK, and says it has invested £18bn in the nation’s economy since 2010.
