Aztec West office park building granted prestigious listed status
Landmark buildings on a Bristol business park have received coveted listed status in recognition of their unique, postmodern design.
200 Aztec West, the set of buildings on Park Avenue at the entrance to Aztec West, is one of 17 postmodern developments recently listed by Historic England for the bold, quirky style that became synonymous with the 1980s.
When 200 Aztec West buildings were built, Aztec West was a pioneering modern business park in a semi-rural location, chosen for its proximity to the M5 and M4 motorways whilst within easy reach of the city of Bristol.
Architects CZWG created a lively, unique and colourful design that would ensure prominence at the gateway to the business park. The unusual design has now been recognised in the prestigious Grade II listing alongside national treasures such as the Isle of Dogs Pumping Station and the postmodern Thematic House in Kensington and Chelsea.
The buildings are essentially square but with circles cut out of one corner to house the entrances. These forecourts follow the turning circle of a car, in a nod to Hollywood limousine-driving glamour and the committed car culture of the 1980s. This, along with the iconic striped brickwork and distinctive column style windows, mean the buildings offer a distinctive entrance to Aztec West.
Nadav Livni, managing director of The Hillview Group, said: “It is not often that an office park building achieves listed status and I am delighted that such postmodern architecture is recognised as an iconic design, protected for future generations. 200 Aztec West is part of our Hillview Partners Property Fund portfolio of regional offices, benefiting from active asset management by the Hillview Real Estate team. These two buildings have been newly refurbished and benefit from a high standard of management, maintenance and security in a prominent location on the park.”
200 Aztec West has one suite currently on the market for let with property agents JLL and Hartnell Taylor Cook as part of a development comprising two newly refurbished, self-contained office buildings with eight individual suites covering 45,151 square feet.
