British Airways (BA) is set to announce an agreement with several trade unions regarding a deal to suspend more than 36,000 staff due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
It is being reported that up to 80% of the staff affected by this announcement would be furloughed and none would lose their jobs at this time.
However, all British Airways staff at Gatwick and London City airports are to be furloughed under the proposed terms.
Trade Union GMB today said: “GMB and our sister union Unite have fought hard to secure members terms, conditions and job security. We believe the current deal, which is nearing its conclusion, secures this.
“But there are significant challenges for the aviation industry and whilst this current deal gives security for BA staff now, the government can’t take its eye off the ball.”
International Airlines Group, which owns BA, last month said its capacity would be down 75% in April and May compared with the same period last year.
