Businesses and residents are being asked to vote on the formation of an historic new date in the calendar.

Passion for Somerset is giving all the people of the county an opportunity to choose the date that will make up the proposed new Somerset Day to celebrate all that is great about Somerset.

Pople can vote at www.passionforsomerset.co.uk from Monday 5 January until Friday 16 January.

Dates and themes are:

11th May: The historic date when Alfred the Great ‘gathered all the people’ of Somerset
19th May: Commemorating St Dunstan who was born in Somerset and was England’s most popular Saint;
6th July: Remembering the Battle of Sedgemoor fought in 1685 – the last battle fought on English soil.

Passion for Somerset was created by Somerset businesses to represent the county’s businesses and its 900,000 residents who live in an area from Bath in the East, to Minehead in the West, Yeovil in the South and Portishead in the North.

PfS Chairman John Turner comments: “As we who live here know, Somerset is one of the world’s best locations.

“Now is the chance for people to make their choice on a new annual day when we can celebrate everything that is great about our county.

“As the third-biggest county in England and home to world-famous events, people and businesses such as Glastonbury, Jenson Button and Cheddar Cheese – there is no county quite like it!”

Visit Somerset, TauntonForward, leading businesses and Somerset’s local authorities are all supporting the event.
