Covid-19 News | Latest News | North West | Sport

Championship football club Wigan Athletic have officially entered administration, becoming the first English professional club to do so since the coronavirus pandemic began this year. The English Football League has said Wigan will be deducted 12 points as a result.

The sanction will be applied at the end of this season if the North West-based club, 14th in the Championship, finish outside the bottom three after the completion of the season. If Wigan finish in the relegation zone, the penalty will be applied during the 2020-21 season instead.

Previous owner Dave Whelan sold the club to Hong Kong-based International Entertainment Corporation in November 2018. However, in May this year, Next Leader Fund took ownership of the club.

Gerald Krasner, Paul Stanley and Dean Watson of Begbies Traynor have been appointed as joint administrators.
