Chartered surveyors set to revitalise one of Leeds’ oldest buildings

KirkgateChartered surveyors Carter Towler are set to breathe new life into 90 Kirkgate, a three storey 18th century property in the heart of the city’s Townscape Heritage Initiative.

The dilapidated building, close to the Grade II listed White Cloth Hall, has practically been rebuilt and is now back in use with a retail unit on the ground and first floors, and offices on the second.

Commenting on the redevelopment, Carter Towler director Chris Priestley said: “This has been an extraordinary project to work on not just because of the historical significance of the building itself but the extent to which we as a company have been involved.

“Our Building Consultancy team first started on the scheme 18-months ago. We have project managed all aspects of the rebuild including feasibility studies, design and specification, negotiating with Leeds City Council’s planning department and heritage officer, securing funding, overseeing the tendering process and managing the principal contractor.

“We were then joined by our Agency colleagues who marketed the property and secured a new tenant before the works had been completed. Now we have handed over to Carter Towler’s Property Management team who are responsible for looking after the building going forward.”

Pete Bradbury, Carter Towler’s retail agency associate director added: “It is really pleasing to see the transformation of Leeds’ oldest street. A number of properties have been given a new lease of life and there is a really encouraging level of renewed vibrancy in this part of the city centre. We hope it continues until the whole street is thriving once again.”

Carter Towler is one of the largest independent firms of property consultants in the north and is acknowledged as one of the most commercially active. In the past 12 months it has been involved in over 300 deals and currently manages over 2000 properties for its clients nationwide.

Its building consultancy division is currently working on a 60,000 sq ft industrial unit refurbishment at Middleton, Leeds and a multi-site social housing maintenance scheme also in Leeds.
