A group of 68 North West businesses that have found export success overseas have been recognised as Export Champions by the Department for International Trade (DIT).

The businesses have been selected by DIT for their approach to growing the UK economy through exporting and, as Export Champions, will now encourage their peers in the region to follow suit. Champions will offer practical advice on how to turn exporting ambitions into a reality, and guidance on how DIT can help businesses break into new markets.

The list of North West Champions includes Manchester-based beauty brand CODE Beautiful, Cumbrian playground equipment specialist Playdale Playgrounds, and Liverpool’s Aqua Running International which manufactures fitness suits for underwater exercise.

The Export Champion community launches as part of DIT’s ‘Exporting is GREAT’ campaign and is being introduced in response to a desire from businesses to receive peer-to-peer exporting support.

As part of the programme, there are now 250 Export Champions active across England, and DIT’s ambition is to expand the programme to at least 1,000 Champions by April 2020.

UK exports increased by 2% in 2018 to more than £248bn.

Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr Liam Fox MP, said: “Our Export Champions play a central role in providing peer-to-peer support for businesses in the North West. Each of our Export Champions has been carefully selected because of their exceptional exporting track record and ability to play an important role in encouraging, advising and supporting businesses who are new to marketing themselves overseas.

“I encourage others to get in touch to see how they could benefit from the programme and grow their business through international trade.”

Paul Stowers, DIT’s head of region for the North West, said: “Our Export Champions have all displayed excellence in global ambition and each is well-placed to help other local businesses navigate their own exporting journey. Any business looking to enter new markets, or start exporting for the first time, should get in touch with the DIT North West team today and find out how exporting could help them reach their full growth potential.”
