Do relaxed quarantine rules also mean working less?

Today marks Work From Home Day, and Brits are encouraged to continue working from home if they can from May 17 – despite lifting rules on pubs, restaurants and allowing people to mix inside.

However, people in the United Kingdom are tired of working long hours in remote settings.  New data from NordVPN Teams shows employees are finally back to their pre-quarantine working schedule, a year after the global coronavirus pandemic started.

The UK increased its average workday by almost 25%, adding an extra 10 hours — an additional week per month — since the beginning of the pandemic in March-April 2020. The lengthening of the workday was observed as many began working from home last year; working longer hours has become the ‘new normal.’

Online working hours across some European countries have started to stabilize in March-May, with employees having had the opportunity to return to the office in some capacity, and quarantine rules are beginning to be gradually relaxed finally.

Elsewhere in Europe — Belgium and Austria are also back to their pre-quarantine working regime.

However, according to research and advisory firm Gartner, 82% of business leaders plan to let employees continue to work from home at least some of the time, while 47% plan to allow employees to do so permanently.

In light of this ‘new normal’ and with the frequency and severity of data breaches continuing to rise, it’s time to turn to remote work security.

Temporary or not, the shift to remote work has caused lasting changes to the way people work. Even companies that are going back to having an office presence have developed WFH practices and will continue to enhance them, whether by hiring more remote employees, retaining employees who move out of town or even shifting entirely and permanently to remote work.
