Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards has been confirmed as the first NextGen speaker of 2019.
Launched in 2018 by Business Leader Magazine and Weston College, NextGen is an inspirational speaker series that brings famous and inspiring people from business, sport and the arts to the South West.
For 2019 Albert Goodman will be the headline sponsor for the event.
Eddie will be talking about his sporting career and ‘triumph over adversity’ at the event, which will take place on Thursday May 9 at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare.
Eddie was ranked 55th in the world which qualified him as the only GB applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. With the UK firmly backing the plasterer from Gloucestershire, he famously took to the slopes followed by a whirlwind of international press and media. Eddie competed in the 70m and 90m jump events, but came last in both events.
Although he did not win an Olympic medal, he did win a place in the hearts of spectators all around the globe. This was ultimately due to his lack of success, but more importantly his pure determination and ‘have a go’ attitude.
A film was made about his life in 2016, starring Hugh Jackman.
Dave Crew – Head of Employer Partnerships at Weston College – comments: “NextGen is all about inspiring business leaders and professionals by bringing interesting speakers to the region. Eddie The Eagle is certainly that and it’s set to be a spectacular event.”
The event will start at 8am and finish at 10am. To book your place email firstname.lastname@example.org
It is free to attend, and places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
