Bristol man who started business with £200 celebrates ‘landmark’ year

An entrepreneur from Bristol who set up his business with just £200 capital is on course to celebrate a record breaking year in business.

Chris Holland, 32, who is founder and director at Waste Source- a waste management company that covers the UK – says that his business is projected to hit a record turnover of £2.4m by its financial year end in November.

The company, which is based at the Tobacco Factory in Bedminster and employs seven people, was achieving sales of £265k three years ago and is on course for an impressive near 100 per cent increase in turnover compared to last year.

A trained accountant, Chris has previously worked at Mitie and Pieminister and says he first had the idea for his business, whilst working at the iconic Pie business.

A year later he teamed up with Jon Free, who utilised his IT background to build the firm’s website and telecoms and systems infrastructure from scratch.

Chris comments: “I was working in procurement at Pieminister and had the idea to start up a waste brokerage firm that embraced technology and placed ultimate value on service. I only had £200 capital at the time which meant that it was initially challenging. But fast forward to now and we’re on course for a record year, employing new staff and have a vision to growth that is ambitious.”

Waste Source counts companies such as Turtle Bay, Boston Tea Party and Oak Furniture Land as clients and manage of all of their waste processes in an ethical and transparent way.

Chris says that the firm also have a healthy pipeline going forward; with one of the latest deals seeing the firm working with the famous Ivy Restaurant from August this year.

He comments: ‘We’re a fun, vibrant and purposeful business and I’ve enjoyed the journey so far. It’s had its challenges such as uncertain economic times but I’m proud of my team and our success. We don’t have an investor on-board, no business loans or debt. Maybe we’re a rarity in that sense.’

Waste Source’s mission statement is to make waste disposal a simpler, cheaper and more effective process for businesses of any size, especially those that operate across multiple locations.
