Homeless charity in desperate need of volunteers

Comfot at ChristmasHomeless charity Comfort At Christmas is in urgent need of volunteers to help out in Weston-super-Mare over the festive period.

For the past 22 years the charity has been providing food and accommodation for homeless people in the resort from 1pm on Friday December 23 until Wednesday, December 28.

The shelter is housed temporarily at St Paul’s Church in Walliscote Road and the church will again be opening its doors to offer support.

But organisers say while they can expect dozens of homeless people to turn up, they do not have enough volunteers to help run it and they are now desperate.

The charity urgently needs people to work evening and night shifts to ensure the service can continue throughout the festive season.

Around 30 volunteers are required to help ensure those less fortunate do not miss out on food and a warm place to stay.

Committee chairman Jon Codd said: “We find ourselves in the position of being desperate for evening shift volunteers from 6pm-11pm and night shift volunteers from 11pm-8am.

“This is a worthy cause supporting those less fortunate at Christmas but in order to provide this shelter we do need more volunteers to help out with cooking, tidying, chatting to clients as well as handing out clothing, toiletries and presents.

“This year St Paul’s have even added a shower facility to the amenities.”

Charity is also on the agenda thanks to the JustGiving Awards 2011. For more information visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD0z6H_NCLA
