Challenger energy supplier and specialist air source heat pump installer, Igloo Energy, is today announcing the appointment of a new Non-executive Chairman to the company’s board, former Npower CEO, Volker Beckers.

Since leaving integrated energy company Npower and after more than 25 years in senior positions across and within the energy sector, Volker’s non-executive portfolio spans across private and public sector as well as academia and work with charities. His key focus is still on energy and adjacent sectors and with additional knowledge of the technologies heralded as the future of energy provision.

This is the first role Volker has accepted with an energy supplier since leaving Npower in 2012. His wealth of experience in the UK and international utilities industries means he will be able to advise on Igloo’s strategy as the challenger brand looks to scale rapidly yet sustainably as a supplier. Volker’s background in forward-looking technologies will also support the development of Igloo’s pioneering home services arm, Igloo Works, aimed at seamlessly reducing how much energy customers use at home.

Igloo was founded in 2017 to disrupt the traditional energy supply model: providing one simple tariff and actively helping customers use less energy. The company uses smart home technology to track customers’ energy use and deliver clear personalised energy efficiency recommendations. This allows customers to reduce the cost of heating and powering their homes as well as lessening their carbon footprint. Heating in UK homes still accounts for c.15% of the UK’s carbon emissions but, with the variation in the existing housing stock, each home needs a tailored energy-efficiency solution. In December 2019, the company received a strategic investment of up to £20 million from global integrated utility company Osaka Gas.

Having grown rapidly, Igloo now supplies over 130,000 residential customers across the UK and its proposition have led to strong customer service ratings across Citizens Advice, Trustpilot and MoneySavingExpert.

CEO and Co-founder of Igloo Energy, Matt Clemow, says: “We are delighted that Volker is joining the Igloo board as Non-executive Chairman. We are privileged to be able to support our customers in reducing their energy use and so their carbon footprint. Volker’s experience will be invaluable as we look to scale as an energy supplier and roll out alternative heating technologies to customers’ homes at scale. Volker has both the vision and the expertise to support us in achieving our goals.”

Volker Beckers, Non-executive Chairman at Igloo Energy, comments: “I am passionate about driving an energy sector which is fit for the future. With technology set to play an integral part in this evolution, Igloo Energy is a natural fit for my skill set and passion. This is an incredibly exciting time for both the energy industry and Igloo, full of challenge and promise. We need energy solutions which support people in reducing their carbon footprint whilst protecting their finances and are easy to use. This is exactly where Igloo delivers.”
