Both Manchester and Liverpool have been announced on the shortlist for the new Channel 4 national headquarters.
Channel 4 is seeking to establish three new creative hubs outside London, as part of its ‘4 All the UK’ strategy.
More than 30 submissions were received, with the shortlists agreed by chief executive Alex Mahon, chief commercial officer Jonathan Allan and the broadcaster’s executive team.
Both Manchester and Liverpool face intense competition not only each other but also from Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds and the West Midlands who are also in the running to host either the main base or a hub.
The new Channel 4 national HQ will operate alongside its London base, and will include a TV studio as well as hosting executive and board meetings. Importantly, it will also bring millions of pounds of additional work for local and regional companies linked to programme commissions.
Each of the shortlisted cities will now participate in a second stage process which will include Channel 4 visiting for a presentation and Q&A. The final locations will be selected in October 2018.
