National supermarket chain Morrisons has announced plans to create up to 1,000 new jobs in order to fulfil online orders for its services on Amazon – again highlighting the shift in retail to online sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Morrisons, the UK’s fourth-biggest supermarket company, said it was hiring extra staff to pick and pack customer orders from more than 50 stores across the UK.

The company’s deal with Amazon, through its Prime subscription service, offers customers the ability to order deliveries in around 30 minutes.

Morrisons revealed earlier this month that it had taken on 45,000 temporary staff to cope with the increased demand, with 25,000 still in employment. 6,000 of those initial temporary staff had now been made permanent.
