My Working Day – Ali Albazaz – Founder and CEO of Inkitt

My Working Day
Ali Albazaz, Founder and CEO, Inkitt

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But, how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Ali Albazaz – Founder and CEO of Inkitt about his working day.

WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?

6am every single day – it’s important to me to keep the routine, even on the weekend

WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY HAVE FOR BREAKFAST?

I drink coffee but don’t eat anything. I do the 16/8 intermittent fasting – meaning that I don’t eat anything from 8pm to 12pm the next day.

WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START

When I was 23, I wrote a page with my life goals that I read every single morning. Followed by a few flashcards where I have written certain traits and behaviours that I want to remind myself to improve on – I review the flashcards 2-3 times per year and update them. Afterwards I open my notebook and answer the following questions:

  • What’s going to be the highlight of my day?
  • Are there any potential problems that I’ll face today?
  • What should I be doing to be at my best?

Then I go for a 10km run (twice per week) or do bodyweight exercises (twice per week) at home. Then I read for 30min, take a shower and start working.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY?

I scan my calendar to remind myself how my day is going to be like, scan my to do list, scan my emails & slack. Then I open my to do list and plan my day in 15min increments.

HOW DO YOU PRIORITISE YOUR DAY’S WORK?

Two factors: A) the impact of the tasks on the business and B) the brainpower the task needs. Mornings are when I have the most brainpower to crack difficult problems. I do most thinking tasks or preparations for important meetings in the morning. Also very important meetings that need high brainpower happen in the mornings.

DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?

Meetings at Inkitt are quite efficient: we use dockethq.com to write an agenda, share them upfront and take notes during meetings. We have a rule that the meeting time should be only used for discussions but not for information transfer. The information should be written out in the agenda already. That makes most meetings quite short and highly efficient.

DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?

I usually read slack and emails or review documents while eating lunch

WHEN DOES YOUR WORKING DAY FINISH?

Depending on whether I have calls with the US my day finishes between 7pm and 9pm.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?

I literally have a blocker on my calendar every morning that says “Prepare tomorrow’s meetings”.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY?

I’ve probably tried all To Do list apps out there and have stuck with Workflowy.com since 3-4 years now. It’s my absolute favorite tool.

HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?

Running, spending time with my family, my fiancée, and walking my 2 year old Labrador, Rocky.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

“Nothing is impossible” – Walt Disney
