My Working Day – Amelia Hitchcock-Meritt – Founder of Bijoux De Mimi

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine? Business Leader spoke to Amelia Hitchcock-Meritt  – Founder of Bijoux De Mimi, about her working day.

What time do you usually wake up?

It totally depends on the day, sometimes I’m in serious boss mode and wake up at 6.45 to go to the gym. On a usual day, I wake up around 8, and if I’m feeling like I need to relax, then around 9.

What do you typically have for breakfast?

I have two poached eggs on sourdough bread consecutively every morning, and occasionally a side of bacon and tomatoes if I’m feeling it. Breakfast is 100% the most important meal of my day!

What’s the rest of your morning routine before you start work?

Have a cup of tea, sometimes go to the gym, get ready and make a to-do list, then walk 25 minutes to the office whilst listening to Spencer and Vogue’s podcast. Soon there will also be my puppy Tallulah included in this!

First thing you do at the start of a workday?

ALWAYS make another cup of tea, go through my to-do list, then go through the orders, check yesterday’s turnover, file off and print that morning’s orders.

How do you prioritise your work?

Another to-do list answer (haha), but on what needs to be done soonest, I never waste time on things that can be done later in the day.

Do you plan meetings, or are they a waste of time?

Most of my meetings are people giving me a plan, for example, with our email marketing or SEO. Although I’m a keen planner, I don’t really need to bother with planning meetings.

Do you have a working lunch, or is it good to take a break?

I start later and then work the whole way through. I don’t usually start till 10.30/11, but the best part of being your own boss is that you can choose what suits you every day. Sometimes, we go and get sushi round the corner if it gets stressful and I feel we all need a break, though my in-office work ethic is very productive but remains chilled.

When does your working day finish?

I usually leave the office around 6 pm, but again this totally depends. My working day never completely stops as such; I am always on my phone, and my laptop and iPad never leave my side when I’m out and about. I think the key to my brand’s success is luck and constant attention.

What’s your favourite piece of technology?

100% my red/pink iMac 2021, honestly the most exciting parcel I’ve received because it’s so branded. I am also a huge fan of our thermal label printers, just because it’s so cool how they print onto our pink shipping labels.

How do you switch off?

Going to Granger&Co for a chicken schnitzel, watching Succession with my boyfriend, or going to Gaz’s (St Moritz club) with my friends on a Thursday night. Though I barely ever ‘switch off’ as such because Bijoux is constantly at the forefront of my mind, 24/7. Oh and shopping, I really, really love to shop. I’m getting a puppy on Friday to give me more of a work-life balance and I imagine that will be a good switch off too.

The best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

1. To start a business when I was bored in Lockdown.
2. Always appreciate what I have even when it gets stressful because not many businesses are lucky enough to do what I have in a year.
