As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Ammad Ahmad – Founder & Managing Director of Atheneum Partners about his working day.

What time do you wake up and why?

Typically around 5.30 or 5.45am, when I find my three-year-old son jumping up and down on my bed or trying to climb over my head to reach the phone on my bedside…it’s really a great time of the day to be honest as it enables me to get focused on the personal priorities of life. Plus it’s just a quiet time of the day, many of our global offices are still closed and the stream of emails hasn’t started, which allows me to structure my time and work on a set of emails and initiatives for a few hours before the day really takes off.

What do you usually have for breakfast?

Just a coffee. It’s not the healthiest of choices, but I’ve been trying to stick to a routine of minimalism. Towards the middle of my day, after a few productive hours and meetings, is when I’m likely to “reward” myself with lunch, that keeps me going for the rest of the day.

What’s your morning routine before work?

I spend some quiet time planning my day and the priorities for the week, churning out some emails to get projects started and catch up on things that typically get fallen behind in the rush of the day-to-day activities. I also try to spend a bit of time with my kids while they are having breakfast so we have some quality time together – as that’s probably the most I’ll see them during the weekday.

What’s the first thing you do to start your working day?

My working day essentially starts soon after waking up and turning on my phone. After a quick scan of emails from the previous evening for any urgent items, I’ll look to make a list of things on my mind; it could be initiatives that I need updates on or meetings that need to be scheduled. However, given that I have a stream of thoughts running through my head as soon as I wake up, I try to take a moment to list them all down, which helps the rest of the day.

How do you prioritise your day’s work?

Client work comes first, unless there is anything urgent internally, so I try to ensure that I get the client-related elements out of the way as soon as possible and then spend time on the internal elements.

Do you plan meetings or is that a waste of time?

It depends on the meeting – I think larger, external meetings are useful for planning and I will always spend time to work out the structure and goals of the meeting.

Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?

Working lunch most days. I often won’t take a break until 3pm’ish, when a simple walk around the block will help clear my head and refocus for the next few hours.

When does your day finish?

I get home around 8pm and the kids will already be in bed. I spend some time having dinner then do a final check on work between 10pm – 11pm before heading to bed.

How do you prepare the next day’s work?

I simply take a quick look at the calendar for the next day to start thinking about what the goals and aims of the day are – unless a particularly big event or meeting is taking place. I’ll do most of the prep early morning, as that’s when I’m most effective

What’s your favourite piece of tech?

I’m still trying to find one, but the Atheneum Insights Platform is great to get me up to speed on things.

How do you switch off?

It’s hard to switch off to be honest. However, over the weekend I will spend time with my family and away from my phone, which helps me recharge.

Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Strategy is determined by what NOT to do. Focus, Focus, Focus.
