My Working Day – Andrew Hazell – MD of Smart Home Sounds

My Working Day

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Andrew Hazell – MD of Smart Home Sounds about his working day.

WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?

I usually wake up around 5.30am so that I can fit everything in before I head to the office around 8.30am. I like to wake up early so that I can get a good start on the day.

WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START WORK?

I go to the gym first thing as this helps with my stress levels and is the best time for me to fit in my exercise for the day. I then try and spend time with my children before they go to school, I have breakfast with them and, when possible, I take them to school.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY? HOW DO YOU PRIORITISE YOUR DAY’S WORK?

The first thing I do is open Trello. This is also what I use to prioritise my work for the day so I document everything I need to do during the day and the rest of the week and decide what needs prioritising. I do this before checking my emails as I often find they take up my time without being productive on what needs to be done that day.

Once I have sorted my priorities in Trello I can then look through my emails to see if anything else needs to added to my To-Do list. Within Trello I can also add any deadlines/ priorities for the rest of the team so they know what is a priority for them.

DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?

We think that meetings can be very useful and a good way of ensuring everyone knows what they should be working on. We tend to have weekly meetings but try not to have a meeting for meeting’s sake!

Instead, we prefer to have smaller team meetings to ensure they are as productive as possible.

DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?

I always make sure I don’t eat my lunch at my desk. I think it’s good to take time out and have a proper break before getting back into it.

WHEN DOES YOUR WORKING DAY FINISH?

I normally try to leave the office around 6.30pm so that I can get home and have dinner with my family. I will then do another hour or so of work in the evening once my children have gone to bed.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?

Most of the time I do this the evening before, again this is documented in Trello. I check that I have got through my To Do list for that day and if anything needs to be looked over again the following day. I can then make sure that nothing gets missed and is dealt with as soon as possible.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY?

Not surprisingly, it’s got to be Trello. Even though it is software based, it organises myself as well as the whole team. It gives me a Birdseye view of everything that’s going on in the company. I can’t go a day without using Trello and it also helps with taking some of the stress away from a large To Do list, making it more manageable and ensuring everything gets done.

HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?

I do find it difficult to switch off however I try to do as much as possible with my children and make sure that I turn my phone off when I can. I also like to use the app Headspace as much as possible as this is a great way of switching off and focus on de-stressing and not thinking about work. Going to the gym in the morning also helps me to focus on something else and switch off from work stresses.
