As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to JChris Ayre – Managing Director of AYRE Event Solutions – about his working day.
What time do you usually wake up?
On weekdays, I usually wake up at about 6 am.
What do you typically have for breakfast?
I like to start the day with something light, so I usually opt for a yoghurt.
What’s the rest of your morning routine before you start work?
I usually leave home for the office at 7:30 am and before I do anything, I make a coffee – coffee makes the world go round!
First thing you do at the start of a workday?
The first thing I’ll do on a morning is check all my emails. I will sort through them all and create an order of priorities so I can properly attack my inbox.
How do you prioritise your work?
I try to follow my emails, but more often than not, any priority I’ve set soon disappears. There’s always something that comes up out of the blue which will require my attention.
Do you plan meetings or are they a waste of time?
For me, it really depends on what’s going on and what needs to be covered in the session. If I need to speak with clients directly about something, I always think its best to book in a meeting so we can make sure everything is covered and it’s just a better use of all our time.
Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?
I’m guilty of working all the time, but I do try and get a little break in the day. Even if it’s just a short while where I can watch YouTube videos whilst having my lunch. I find that’s a good way to squeeze in a little break.
When does your working day finish?
As a small business owner, I find that I’m always switched on, and always getting or responding to emails so I don’t think my working day actually has a finishing time!
How do you prepare for your next day’s work?
I tend not to really plan ahead for the next day as there’s always something that will crop up that will need sorting, so I tend to take each day as it comes.
What’s your favourite piece of technology?
I run a company that orientates around technology. I love all sorts of technology, from items we use for events to personal items such as my Apple watch, it’s hard for me to pick one favourite.
How do you switch off?
I never tend to switch off. I’m always thinking about the business, better ways of working, watching how others work, what they do, looking for opportunities and sourcing inspiration.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
It doesn’t matter if you don’t get things right the first time as long as you learn from your mistakes.
