As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But, how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to Chris Holland – the Managing Director of Bristol-based waste management company, Waste Source, about his working day.
What time do you usually wake up?
I normally wake up around 6:30, unless my boys decide it should be earlier!
What do you typically have for breakfast?
Bowl of cereal and glass of orange juice.
What is the rest of your morning routine before you start work?
Battling Bristol’s horrendous traffic!
What is the first thing you do at the start of your working day?
Grab a coffee and say hello to the team’s early starters.
How do you prioritise your day’s work?
By whatever is most important!
Do you plan meetings or are they a waste of time?
We have short, sharp internal meetings, which I think are really useful and help to keep people focused. I like visiting customers and our service providers, as in our industry it’s a lot easier to talk about things when you are on site. However, I definitely don’t do this often enough.
Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?
I always try to take at least 15 mins, there is always plenty going on around North Street in Bristol.
When does your working day finish?
When I go to bed. I will always be reading emails or reviewing daily activity, even when I’m on the golf course or have my feet up at home.
How do you prepare for the next day’s work?
Unless I have a meeting I don’t really need to do any preparation. I just prepare for the unexpected, as something interesting always crops up.
What is your favourite piece of technology For work?
My mobile phone. For life? My golf watch. It is impossible to play on courses I don’t know very well, without it giving me the yardages I need!
How do you switch off?
I’m going to be honest, I don’t really switch off. I’m one of those people that always likes to be doing something. I find running Waste Source so enjoyable, that I have no issue ‘working’ even when I’m lying on a beach.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
I have had too much to single one piece out. A lot of people have helped to get the business where it is today.
