My Working Day – Connie Nam – Founder and CEO of Astrid & Miyu

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine? Business Leader spoke to Connie Nam – Founder and CEO of Astrid & Miyu about her working day.

What time do you usually wake up?

Normally between 6am and 7am, depending on when the kids decide to wake me up. 

What do you typically have for breakfast?

An oat milk latte and water are my usual go to. 

What is the rest of your morning routine?

I’ll do some yoga then just jump in the shower – puts me in a positive mood for the day! 

What is the first thing you do at the start of the working day?

I look at my calendar for rest of the week so I can plan ahead. I’ll then set my priorities for that day specifically to keep my day organised, this also keeps me thinking creatively.

How do you prioritise your day’s work?

For me, diary management and prioritisation are key to staying organised whilst juggling business and family life. I swear by having a calendar of what I want to achieve each year, which is divided into quarterly goals and planned week-by-week.

It’s all about setting short- and long-term targets for where I want to dedicate my time. For instance, in Q4 this year I’m aiming to spend 30% of my time on strategy, 30% on teambuilding, 20% on external engagement and 20% on recruitment. As well as weekly and quarterly planning, I block out chunks of time each day to ensure I have the space to think and remain strategic and creative.

Do you plan meetings or are they a waste of time?

If I am a participant then there’s not so much planning, but if I’m leading or moderating a meeting I always plan in order to get the most out of the session for the team.

Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?

I always take a break. I normally eat lunch and then go for a walk before I sit back down at my desk for the afternoon.

When does your working day finish?

I try to have a full stop at 6pm so I can spend some quality time with my children and put them to bed. However, I do sometimes log back on if I need to finish anything off that I have listed a priority for that day.

 How do you prepare for the next day’s work?

I typically put in preparation work blocks in my calendar if needed – otherwise I just organise my calendar on a daily basis and remind myself of my priorities.

What’s your favourite piece of technology?

The iPhone.

How do you switch off?

I try to practice yoga for least 20 minutes each day – it really helps me relax. At the weekends and during my planned holidays, I tend not to over-schedule things – I just want to unwind and enjoy spending time with my girls and husband.

Surround yourself with positive people.
