As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to Dan Martin – CEO of Elmtronics, about his working day.
WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?
Between 6 – 6.15am.
WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY HAVE FOR BREAKFAST?
It’s never the same thing, sometimes yoghurt, fruit or porridge. A bacon sandwich has been known on a Friday morning.
WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START WORK?
After breakfast, it’s a shower followed by walking the dog for 20 minutes which I find clears my head and helps put my daily tasks in order.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY?
I arrive at work at 8am, make myself a coffee and have 10 minutes with each of the head of departments to find out any updates or challenges. From here, I start organising my tasks for the day.
HOW DO YOU PRIORITISE YOUR DAY’S WORK?
I always carry an old school notebook and every day it holds a new priority list to work through.
DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?
I’m conscious not to absorb too much of my colleague’s bandwidth. I’m not a fan of having a meeting for the sake of it but a short, punchy meeting can be really valuable. Face-to-face meetings add a level of attention you can’t get through a call or email, so meetings do have their place.
DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?
I don’t take a break, however, I do endorse it to my workmates which I guess makes me a hypocrite!
WHEN DOES YOUR WORKING DAY FINISH?
I leave the office at 6pm, however, if I’m working away (typically 2 days a week), I tend to grab a meeting over an evening meal.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?
I jot notes down through the day as priority tasks pop up which feeds into the next day’s task list. I can’t say I follow this to the letter – I think anyone who runs a business and claims this is fibbing as you are constantly pulled in all sorts of directions.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY?
My car – it’s a new Jaguar I-Pace which is 100 percent electric and the fastest thing I have ever driven.
HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?
I’m a Dad of three daughters and various after school activities keep me focused on them rather than work. I rarely work a weekend – weekends are family time and it’s my golden rule.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
“Positive perseverance is the pathway to success”. I didn’t quite understand the power of this when I was first told it but it has become clearer over the years. Essentially enough of the right type of constant activity with the right activity works and doors unlock in front of you.
