My Working Day – Daniel Featherstone – Founder & CEO of Made For Drink

My Working Day

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But, how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Daniel Featherstone – Founder and CEO of Made For Drink – about his working day.

What Time Do You Usually Wake Up?

7am.

What Do You Typically Have for Breakfast?

A cup of coffee and normally Weetabix or scrambled eggs on toast.

What’s The Rest of Morning Routine Before You Start Work?

I try to make sure I have a nice breakfast with the kids and spend quality time with my family and pre-lockdown, walking my kids to school. I’ll normally leave just after 9am.

First Thing You Do At Start Of Work Day?

Check our sales-in for the day and check my calendar.

How Do You Prioritize Your Work?

I try and keep very focussed on the things that matter most;

  1. Our team and our cash position.
  2. Making, selling and delivering our products to our customers to our very best ability
  3. Strategically moving us forward as a business; growing the business tenfold over the next three years, building our long term partnerships and setting out a clear path and vision for us all to works towards.

Everything we do is built around delivering these objectives and so my calendar is normally shaped a couple of months in advance to try and deliver against this and my actions in the week are predominantly focussed on these simple things.

Do You Plan Meetings or Keep them Fluid?

I plan meetings to an extent. I’ll always make sure everyone knows the objective of the meeting and why it’s important and I’ll always personally have scribbled down on a piece of paper what the objective is and what my essential, desirable and optimal outcomes of the meeting are. I always feel if I can’t walk into a meeting and be able to articulate those things to myself then I shouldn’t or don’t deserve to be in that meeting.

Working Lunch or Take A Break?

I’ll always try and take 15 mins and have lunch with one of the team. We also have a full team lunch every Friday (that Made For Drink buys for everyone) with one another where for an hour we’ll enjoy each other’s company over some nice food.

When Does Your Working Day End?

That varies a lot. But on average about 6pm. But the cliche is real you never actually turn off, especially as Jenny my wife is the Managing Director. Lucky we both love what we do!

How Do You Prepare For Next Day?

If it’s an important meeting (customer, partnership etc..)  I’ll make sure to prepare by writing my objectives and outcomes down on a piece of paper and then mentally run through the meeting, other than that I’ll normally just check my calendar and make sure I know what’s up and coming.  I will also normally have a couple of late night whatsapp or phone calls with specific team or board members to talk through various things coming up and that I’m trying to deliver.

Fav Piece of Tech?

Shopify.

How Do You Switch Off?

The best way for me to properly switch off is to switch off my phone. Which I’m very comfortable doing. I also love playing touch rugby and a bit of running. But I absolutely love what I do and I love thinking about where we are going as a business, and getting excited about that, pretty much non-stop.

Best Piece of Advice You’ve Received?

You need to get your stuff together for just 1% of the time. Recognise that 1% and give it absolutely everything. It’s so true.
