My Working Day

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Denise Williamson, Managing Director at BookWise Solutions. about her working day.

What time do you usually wake up?

I’ll be honest, I’m not naturally an early riser but I normally get up at around 6.00am and either go to the gym, or log on to check what’s happening in the world and answer my emails before heading into work. Whichever I do, it helps to get my working day off to the best start.

What do you typically have for breakfast?

I do always have breakfast but I don’t have a typical one. A cup of tea, however, is essential!

What is the rest of your morning routine before you start work?

After my cup of tea at home, I like to start things off in the office by moving onto coffee, and catching up with my co-workers in the kitchen.

What is the first thing you do at the start of your working day?

I have a ‘to do’ list, but I only have a very short list of ‘must dos’ for each day.

This allows me to be flexible about where my time can be spent, depending on what the day brings, while also ensuring nothing important gets missed or slips under the radar.

How do you prioritise your day’s work?

I like to have short but regular catch-ups with the team in order to learn where my attention needs to be held. As well as communication, I believe it’s important for team building.

Do you plan meetings or are they are waste of time?

Yes, we have regular meetings. Even if they are short, we always make sure they have a purpose and leave the attendees with action points. They are an important part of ensuring the team is up to date with each other’s activity.

Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?

Unless there are urgent, pressing issues or I’m on a client site, I like to take time away from the office as well as the screen, and encourage my staff to do the same.

It allows you to refocus for the afternoon – I often find that if you work through lunch, it’s actually worse for productivity.

When does your working day finish?

Similar to my views on the working lunch, I always like to finish between 5:30pm or 6:00pm.  As the owner of a business it can be all too easy to take the work home with you. Of course, if there is anything time pressing then I’ll stay later but, more often than not, it’s important to take a break too.

How do you prepare for the next day’s work?

I review my to do list and identify the ‘must do’ for the next day. This ensures you wake up knowing where your priorities are each day, and can get in the correct headspace to help get them done!

What is your favourite piece of technology?

Of course I would say our medical technology here at BookWise Solutions, but aside from that, and something I never thought I’d say it, but living without my phone would be incredibly difficult.

How do you switch off?

I used to play sports competitively so I’ve always loved exercising and it’s a good way to relieve stress.  Now, I spend a lot of time gardening, and spending time with my family and friends (and the odd sip of alcohol) keeps me sane, I think…

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

Don’t stress about the things you have no influencer over, but work hard to make things better on those you can.
