My Working Day – Ellie Webb – Founder of Caleño

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine? Business Leader spoke to Ellie Webb – Founder of Caleño, about her working day.

What time do you usually wake up?

Completely depends! If I’m heading to the office, or into the city, it would usually be around half 6, otherwise later. I’m not huge morning person. I’m more of a night owl, so I tend to make sure I get a good 7-8 hours sleep and am well rested, otherwise I’m burnt out by the weekend.

What do you typically have for breakfast?

Greek yogurt, granola, and a giant cup of decent black coffee.

What’s the rest of your morning routine before you start work?

I try and get through around 11-12 business books per year, so whilst I get ready and/or drive into work, I switch on Audible and listen in for around 30-45 mins. At the moment I’m listening to Simon Sinek, ‘Leaders Eat Last’.

What’s the first thing you do at the start of a workday?

I can’t start work without breakfast and coffee! Once that’s out the way, I get to work. Every morning before I speak to the team, or look at emails, I write down my day’s to-do list (all of the things I must get done that day).

How do you prioritise your work?

All my work is broken down from the company’s bigger goals, into smaller monthly and weekly ones that relate to me. That then feeds into my daily priorities list.

Do you plan meetings, or are they a waste of time?

Meetings and regular communication are great! Everything at work moves too quickly, so myself and the team need meetings to inform, update and make decisions. We keep them quick, fun, and productive.

Do you have a working lunch, or is it good to take a break?

I definitely eat lunch, but am occasionally guilty of taking a “quick one” (depending on how busy I am). I do try and get out for 45mins+ over lunch with my dog for a walk as it’s great to get some fresh air.

When does your working day finish?

My day finishes when I’m cooking dinner, or sitting down relaxing with a Caleño! Normally around 7 or 8 pm.

How do you prepare for your next day’s work?

In my experience, a good night’s sleep (with a little help from my CALM app) gives you the fresh perspective and energy needed for the day ahead.

What’s your favourite piece of technology?

It has to be the ‘Canva’ design app – what a game changer. It has basically turned anyone and everyone into a creative designer, I love it!

How do you switch off?

If I’m not working, then at weekends I will always switch off (or as much as possible!). I use those days to reset and do some of the hobbies I enjoy, like hiking, or exploring new places.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Marketers get bored of their marketing much more quickly than others do, so we tend to keep changing things like the messaging or creative. But the key is repetition, that’s how people will remember you.

If you weren’t doing what you are now – what would you be?

When I was younger I was obsessed with being a detective, so I’d probably be in the police, investigating crimes. Shock horror I’m a big fan of Line of Duty.
