My Working Day

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Jacqueline Barleycorn – founder of The Great British Porridge Co., about her working day.

WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?

Normally about 6.30am but I usually spend the first 30 minutes checking and answering messages on social media.

WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY HAVE FOR BREAKFAST?

Ha, this couldn’t be a better questions for me! Porridge of course….is there anything else?

WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START WORK?

I love to potter in the kitchen, usually making lunch and dinner for later and I take my dog for a walk.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY? HOW DO YOU PRIORITISE YOUR DAY’S WORK?

I go through my emails and prioritise what I need to do that day, and try not to get distracted. I answer the quick ones first then flag up the ones that will take more time for later.

DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?

Yes we plan meetings, but we are growing so quickly and so much is happening that everything changes on daily basis at the moment so we’re having to be extra flexible.

DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?

I do try very hard to have a lunch which is why I often make it early on in the day. I know the benefits of regular healthy eating and if I start skipping meals my physical and mental health is affected.

WHEN DOES YOUR WORKING DAY FINISH?

It doesn’t, it just seems to merge with the next day and the one after that!

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?

Lists, lists and more lists.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY?

My juicer and Vitamix…sorry was I meant to say my laptop?

HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?

I genuinely don’t think I ever do. If I’m feeling the stress and pressure I head off for a long dog walk in the downs or go for a bike ride. Fresh air often sorts me out and helps clear my head.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

Que sera sera….what will be will be.
