My Working Day – Jane Gokgoz – founder of Personalised Gifts Shop

My Working Day | Retail

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But, how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Jane Gokgoz, founder of Personalised Gifts Shop, about her working day.

What time do you usually wake up?

I always wake up around 6am. I am keen to get the day started and see what the new working day brings.

What do you typically have for breakfast?

I’m not a big eater in the morning so I always start the day with a strong coffee and lots of it. Coffee is guaranteed to wake me up!

What is the rest of your morning routine before you start work?

I always check my emails to see what’s been happening overnight. Next, I analyse the previous days sales to make sure our growth is on target. It’s also a good time for me to evaluate the buying habits and trends of our customers. We have our own team of in-house designers – we can turn a new product design round in hours – so if I pick up on an emerging trend, we can be quick to build on it. My final task before I leave for the office is to check my to do list for the day.

What is the first thing you do at the start of your working day?

As soon as I get to the warehouse, I usually visit each department and have a chat with the staff. I prefer non-work-related chats. It’s good to know the team on a personal as well as a professional level.

How do you prioritise your day’s work?

I use a planner/task app which I can access anytime from anywhere. I always set my tasks from most to least important and always follow this.

Do you plan meetings or are they a waste of time?

For me, meetings are a waste of time. I only hold meetings when absolutely necessary. Every hour is like a meeting for me as I always share my opinions, ideas or listen to others during the working day. We have an open plan office space – my desk is the same as the rest of the team and I sit alongside them. Working as a team has been an important part of our massive growth over the last eight years.

Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?

Lunch for me is the chance to head home and take my dog for a walk. This gives me time to clear my head before the afternoon and deal with any issues that may have cropped up during the morning. It is always good to take a break, although some days I’m so busy the only chance to take some downtime is when I need to grab a coffee.

When does your working day finish?

My working day generally finishes after dinner, but I do still spend some time keeping an eye on work-related things such as the customer support help desk, analytics, new product releases. I like to be in the loop with everything!

How do you prepare for the next day’s work?

Once I’m up to date with everything in the office, I put my to do list together ready for the next day and start to prioritise the tasks.

Favourite piece of technology?

My smartphone. My business is with me wherever I go.

How do you switch off?

I tend to switch off daily when I’m out walking my dog and during holidays. I do still tend to set aside around an hour a day for work when I’m away, just to keep an eye on things.

Best piece of advice you’ve received?

Be organised, be open to new things and always keep your eye on the ball.
