As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to John McManus – UK Marketing Director for KIND, about his working day.
WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?
I wake up around 6.40am.
WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY HAVE FOR BREAKFAST?
If I’m cycling into work, which I try and do most days; I’ll have some eggs, spinach, tomato and toast. I will also have a coffee of course!
WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START WORK?
I have to admit, I do check my emails pretty early. Our HQ is based in New York, so I get a lot of communications through the night – I do not necessarily reply or action them, but I will flag them before I leave the office.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY?
This varies but if I can send a schedule a few meetings in the right way, I find my team and I are more productive. We run our business in two week ‘sprints’ to manage our focus and energy, a lot of our meetings are updating each other on the progress of our ‘sprints’.
HOW DO YOU PRIORITIES YOUR DAYS WORK?
For as long as I can remember I’ve used ‘to-do lists’ for tasks I have to get done that day, it’s important these are things I have to complete in the day. I keep it simple so a task could be to reply to an email or build a business plan.
DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?
We plan meetings and on the whole, we are pretty good at them. My bugbear is when we sit in meetings without clear owners, actions and outcomes!
DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?
We always take lunch! We’re so lucky that we work next to a food market in London so a big group of us always head out and eat lunch together. Desk lunches are not allowed at Kind!
WHEN DOES YOUR WORKDAY FINISH?
I tend to finish up around 6pm and I like to exercise in the evenings – so luckily working too late is not an option!
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?
I refresh my to-do list before I leave the office – quickly check my diary for the next day and maybe make some notes on certain meetings if I have them.
HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?
I never truly switch off from work, it’s constantly on my mind – but I am more than happy about that – it is a choice! However, when I get home I like to cook and chill out with my girlfriend.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?
I have two bits of advice, that have really helped me.
When I was really young I had a part-time job and my boss would not stop talking about taking pride in your work, otherwise what’s the point?! A simple one but I think I heard it so many times it has stuck in my mind forevermore!
A piece of recent advice I got was about providing clarity is the most important aspect of being a line manager – if your team us clear on your vision then the rest will follow. I have tried to take that into all my communications since. I constantly ask myself – How can I give clarity for my team?
