As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to Kari Owers – Managing Director of O Communications, about her working day.
WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?
I’m a morning person so I tend to come around about 6am.
WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY HAVE FOR BREAKFAST?
Black coffee – I never eat breakfast before 10am.
WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START WORK?
I feed the dog and let him out while checking my emails over a coffee then shower and dress before getting my two teenagers fed and out for the day.
I usually stick something in a slow cooker for dinner and shove washing in the machine before I leave the house.
I will have always checked the news headlines and twitter before I get into the office in case we need to react to something.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY?
Say hi to my team – I am a huge believer in starting the day with a smile and a chat. Then I read the papers.
HOW DO YOU PRIORITISE YOUR DAY’S WORK?
I always do the one task I’m not looking forward to first – that means I have the rest of the day to not worry about it.
Then I make a few notes in a pad on what I need to do that day and hope for the best – working in media and comms it’s almost impossible to say you know what the day will bring.
DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?
Yes, I plan everything in my outlook diary – but I think carefully about whether I need to be in the meeting and delegate if someone else could handle it.
I like meeting face to face with clients though, I prioritise it.
DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?
It depends on my day but I try to take a break. I live five minutes from the office so I might pop home and let the dog out and have a bite to eat.
WHEN DOES YOUR WORKING DAY FINISH?
Anywhere from 4.30 to midnight! It depends on meetings, events and my children’s schedule too.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?
I check my diary and emails in the evenings – I know it’s frowned upon but I like to get ahead of the next day and I make lists on my iPhone of things I need to do.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY?
HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?
I walk or cook and exercise is a great way to quieten the mind.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Go with your gut. If it feels wrong, it generally will be.
