My Working Day – Lucy Arnold – founder of Lucy Locket Loves

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine? Business Leader spoke to Lucy Arnold – Founder of Lucy Locket Loves about her working day.

What time do you usually wake up?

It totally depends on the day ahead but my alarm usually goes off around 7.20am – and I will try and squeeze in a cheeky snooze if I can.

What do you typically have for breakfast?

Overnight oats are my go to breakfast because I can grab them from the fridge and eat them at my desk. On the weekend though I live for big brunch and it’s often one of the highlights of my week.

What is the rest of your morning routine?

In the winter I try to make sure I get my exercise in the morning because I find it hard to motivate myself when I am leaving the office and it’s dark. So a quick session on my peloton before a shower. In summer if the weather is nice I like to walk or cycle to the office to try and get some fresh air before the day ahead.

What is the first thing you do at the start of the working day?

Check my emails. A lot of our manufacturing teams are worldwide so we are often on different times. There is a small spot in the morning when we are online at the same time and try and communicate anything critical.

How do you prioritise your day’s work?

Lists, Lists & More Lists. What needs to be done before lunch, what needs to be done today, what needs to be done this week and what needs to be done this month. This is how I regularly work out what is urgent and needs prioritising.

Do you plan meetings or are they a waste of time?

It depends on what the meeting is. Some are spontaneous and some are scheduled as a weekly check in. But as a relatively small team we take things day to day and how situations arise.

Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?

I am really bad for just eating at my desk whilst working. I remind myself often its good to take a break – I just don’t always listen to myself.

When does your working day finish?

When you work for yourself does it ever finish? I wake up thinking about work and go to sleep thinking about it too. I try to make sure I get some time out every evening but it never feels like a chore to me.

How do you prepare for the next day’s work?

Two days are never the same so I just take each day at a time and never really fully prepare – just wake up every morning with a fresh head and see what the day brings me.

What’s your favourite piece of technology?

I love airdrop on my mac, phone and ipad. I can just change things between devices easily and I can copy something on my phone and paste it on my mac. It’s one of my things I would hate if I was without.

How do you switch off?

Riding my bike is my favourite thing to do. Outdoors and indoors – it’s my time and I always feel so much better after doing it. Also just spending time with my loved ones with my phone on do not disturb – so work can’t distract me.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

What other people actually think of you is actually none of your business. Everybody has opinions and I don’t like everybody so how can I expect everybody to like me. It really helps put things in perspective on a negative mindset day.
