As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But, how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to Mark Slade – CEO of Location Sciences about his working day.
WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?
I spend half of my time in New York, building our US business, and the rest in the UK. In New York, I’m up super early (4am) to speak with the UK team. Then I’ll be running around Manhattan from meeting to meeting showing our product to potential buyers. When I’m back in the UK, my son wakes up the entire family at around 6am… it’s useful having your own personal alarm clock.
WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY HAVE FOR BREAKFAST?
Whilst I try to be healthy, I’m constantly on the go so it has to be something convenient. Be that healthy or not!
WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START WORK?
First point of call is coffee. Then I start by organising my day. This is usually by working my way through priority emails and pinning them to the top of my inbox.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY?
The first thing I do is check Slack. Regardless of which side of the pond I am on, I will always have a stream of messages from my colleagues on the other side of the world.
HOW DO YOU PRIORITISE YOUR DAY’S WORK?
We’ve just launched Verify – a location authentication platform – in the US so I make sure I dedicate enough time to support the team and attend sales meetings as needed.
I speak to the key management team early on every day to discuss what’s most pressing on their agendas. This is also a chance to address any issues before they develop.
DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?
I don’t believe in meetings for meetings sake, but I do schedule in the super important ones. We also have a great open plan office which means people can ask questions and get an immediate response. It’s often me asking the questions!
DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?
I do like to meet with clients for breakfast or lunch as much as possible. It is a more relaxed way to meet and can be far more productive. In terms of the team, I encourage everyone to step away from their desks and have a breather. If everyone is energised this is when the best work happens.
WHEN DOES YOUR WORKING DAY FINISH?
When I’m in the UK my day can finish quite late to speak to the US team. We use Zoom regularly for video calls. In the US I’m usually asleep by 7pm due to never quite adjusting to the time zones.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?
The most important thing I can do to prepare is wind down as soon as possible in the evening. This helps to make sure I am up and ready in the morning.
HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?
A glass of nice red wine and a sci-fi film.
FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY?
Slack and Zoom! I can’t imagine not having access to the team and wider groups without Slack. I can start a Slack group on a new product feature while flying over Greenland.. so cool! A very useful tool that ensures I maximise my productivity when travelling.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED?
Get products out quickly in Beta mode and test them with close customers. They might not be perfect, but the feedback and input you get gives your company such value in scoping the product and deciding if it is going to be a success or failure.
