My Working Day – Martin Murray – Co-Founder of Dunnet Bay Distillers
As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to Martin Murray – Co-Founder of Dunnet Bay Distillers, about his working day.
WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY WAKE UP?
I am an early bird, so typically 6am.
WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY HAVE FOR BREAKFAST
We have six hens, so most days for me it’s poached eggs. At the week-end we will have some Loch Fyne salmon with it.
WHAT IS THE REST OF YOUR MORNING ROUTINE BEFORE YOU START WORK?
My morning routine has changed over the past five years and now I feel I have a good rhythm. Typically I wake at 6am, exercise and shower before 7am. Then I get 15 mins to think of the day ahead and check overnight emails from the US and Asia.
Around 7.30am I get the kids up and start breakfast for 8am. At 8.30am I head to work. In the summer I walk along the beach to the office and this takes about 15 mins. On the best weather days I extend this to a walk through the forest and it takes about 40 minutes. It’s a time for me step back and think about the business situation or catch up on podcasts.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT THE START OF YOUR WORKING DAY?
Make a coffee. It’s a habit I picked up in France. I then write down three things I want to do that day.
HOW DO YOU PRIORITIES YOUR DAYS WORK?
Prioritising is always tricky. I use Trello and One Note to make sure I can work off lists that I score to prioritise.
DO YOU PLAN MEETINGS OR ARE THEY A WASTE OF TIME?
I am not a fan of large or long meetings. We have around one or two meetings a week maximum.
DO YOU HAVE A WORKING LUNCH OR IS IT GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK?
Taking a break is really important. I like a walk then a quick bite. When I worke at Dounreay, my old manager Tommy Munro took me under his wing and we went on walks every day before a quick bite. The exercise and chat is a real distraction from work and I think it helps to come back refreshed for the afternoon.
WHEN DOES YOUR WORKDAY FINISH?
I tend to have a pause around 5pm to 8pm and then do an hours work before 9pm.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE NEXT DAY’S WORK?
I try to flag items on my phone as they pop up. It’s the only way as I struggle to remember.
HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?
I love exploring our local area with the kids. Our hot chocolate picnics in the winter are great fun.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?
Trust your gut instinct, but do the work to back it up.
