As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals. But how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?
Business Leader spoke to Rachel Clinkard, eCommerce Director at Charles Clinkard about her working day.
What time do you usually wake up?
On a weekday I set my alarm for 6.30am, but on a weekend I do enjoy a little lie in.
What do you typically have for breakfast?
At the moment I’m enjoying banana and toast, but most days it’s cereal and yoghurt.
What is the rest of your morning routine before you start work?
The school run! With two teenage boys, it can be pretty hectic in our house first thing on a morning, but we manage to make it work.
What is the first thing you do at the start of the workday?
Typically, I start the day by checking my emails and monitoring sales from the previous day. I also check my diary to see what meetings I have scheduled for the day, then it’s full steam ahead.
Do you plan meetings or are they a waste of time?
I’m in meetings most days – I think it’s important to stay in touch and keep positive whilst we’re all working from home. I check in with my team daily, and I think video calls are a great way to do so. The calls also allow the team to collaborate effectively and keep our team mentality strong!
When does your working day finish?
I try to switch off at 6.30pm, which gives me time to help the boys with their schoolwork.
How do you prepare for your next day’s work?
To-do lists! Before switching off, I tend to review any deadlines or meetings I have scheduled for the next day which I find helps to keep me in check.
What is your favourite piece of technology?
I’m a huge bookworm, and I’ve recently starting using a Kindle. I thought I’d miss reading paper books, but I love the simplicity of it!
How do you switch off?
I like to spend as much time as I can with my boys. During lockdown, I’ve been trying to take the time to cook more which is proving interesting! Now that the weather is a bit brighter, we’re trying to go on more bike rides and spend time outdoors.
Best piece of advice you have ever received?
In order to be successful, a team needs a lot of different skills and personalities, which is something I always keep in mind today!
