My Working Day – Ryan Ball – MD of South West Upholstery

My Working Day

As the leader of a company, you are there to set an example, to lead and inspire a team of individuals to achieve a series of business goals.  But, how do these business leaders go about their daily routine?

Business Leader spoke to Ryan Ball – MD of South West Upholstery about his working day.

What time do you usually wake up?

I’m generally an early bird up around 6 – 6.30 apart from the weekends when I try to lie in a bit.

What do you typically have for breakfast?

Depends on what I fancy generally a bowl of Weetabix or bacon, scrambled eggs and mushrooms.

What’s the rest of your morning routine before you start work?

I like to get out for a walk with the dog if I have time followed by the school run if it’s raining. Then straight to work!

First thing you do at the start of a workday?

Quick glance over emails and deal with anything urgent then onto the next most important thing…which changes daily.

How do you prioritise your work?

I love a list! I’ll always have a list from the last day in order of the most important things I need to deal with ready for the next day. I will generally deal with the most urgent item which sometimes could take up the whole day. I like to complete the task and move onto the next priority. I’ve learned to say no so I don’t get side-tracked or sucked into something less important.

Do you plan meetings or are they a waste of time?

I always plan meetings and make sure they have a clear structure and ask myself do I really need to attend? Over Covid-19 I think we have all had an eye opener that with video we don’t need to be physically sat in lots of meetings and travelling about.  It’s now all about a new way of working.

Do you have a working lunch or is it good to take a break?

Depends on my day. I like to move with pace especially when I’m in the zone so sometimes I’ll eat as I work and this could be something I have brought in from home or I’ll grab something on the move. If it’s a slower paced day I will stop and take a break but I must admit I do like to power on and get stuff done.

When does your working day finish?

Usually around 6pm but then I will clear down emails from the day and plan out the next day which could take another hour after dinner.

How do you prepare for your next day’s work?

With a list and clear priorities of where my time should be spent. I check my calendar for the day ahead to clarify who I’m meeting or talking to so I’m well prepared.

What’s your favourite piece of technology?

Has to be my iPhone.  I’m finding all the time I can get so much done on it especially when I’m on the move. I also like talking to people so prefer a chat instead of multiple emails if possible.

How do you switch off?

I enjoy cooking, long walks with family and spending time with my two children.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Keep your head down and keep doing what you believe in, even when things get tough.
