New face covering rules come into force for retailers across England

In a report released by the government today, new face mask rules have come into force for retailers across England.

Face coverings are now compulsory for customers in shops following the government issuing guidance on the change.

The rules have also been expanded to other areas of public places. Masks or coverings are mandatory in enclosed public spaces such as transport hubs, banks and takeaways – as well as supermarkets, indoor shopping centres and high street stores.

As part of the new regulations, police officers across England can now hand-out fines of up to £100 for those who do not comply.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “As we move into the next stage of easing restrictions for the public, it is vital we continue to shop safely so that we can make the most of our fantastic retail industry this summer.”
