A new veterinary practice is opening its doors on New Road in Chippenham, with support from a £130,000 loan from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

With growing demand for a practice to care for family pets in the area as a result of new residential developments, local veterinary surgeons Selina Walters and Phillipa Hunt saw the opportunity to start their first practice together in Chippenham.

The business partners, who collectively have over 30 years of veterinary experience, turned to Lloyds Bank to secure a six-figure loan. The loan was used to fund the deposit for a 1,955 square foot property, as well as x-ray, ultrasound, surgical and laboratory equipment.

This funding forms part of the bank’s pledge to lend £1.5bn to South West businesses in 2019 as it continues to help Britain prosper.

The new state-of-the-art practice, Chalkland Vets, will have two consulting rooms, as well as a dental suite, operating theatre, isolation facility, imaging suite and 12 car parking spaces for its clients.

The business is projected to generate revenues of £320,000 in its first year and to grow its workforce from five to seven in the next 12 months.

Selina Walters, co-founder and veterinary surgeon, said: “I grew up on a farm and have always loved animals, and it has been a lifelong aspiration of mine to open and own my very own veterinary practice. We saw a gap in the market here, and when a property became available we knew it was the right decision to take the plunge and start our own business.

“Lloyds Bank has been by our side the whole way, right through from gaining permission to turn the property into a veterinary practice and kitting it out with equipment, to opening our doors to the public. We now look forward to bringing our services to the Chippenham community.”

Paul Gunstone, healthcare relationship manager at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said: “The business is bringing a valued and much needed service to the fast-growing local area, and we look forward to seeing what the next twelve months has in store for Chalkland Vets.

“We are committed to supporting the growth ambitions of entrepreneurs like Selina and Phillipa, and are on hand to provide the funding support and capital to help deliver business’ long-term growth plan.”
