North East sports retailer boasts 130% boost in pre-tax profits

Sportswear retailer, Start Fitness, has filed year-end financial results which boast a 130% increase in pre-tax profits.

The results were posted in accounts for W&M Holding Company, which trades as Start Fitness, and reported turnover of £23.5m for the year ending 31 July 2018. Pre-tax profits more than doubled to reach £1.6m.

Start Fitness was founded in 1992 and employs over 80 people, and has built ties with several athletic associations including the Northern Athletics League, the North Eastern Harrier League, and the Metropolitan Cross Country League. The retailer has a flagship store in Newcastle which stocks over 8,000 items, and additional outlets in Durham and Darlington.

The company’s strategic report said: “The business has grown in recent years mainly due to increased reputation, brand awareness and a continued push to look for new lines and business opportunities.

“The company finds itself in a strong financial position and is well-placed to face the challenges ahead.

“Future plans include continued investment in the company’s management and operating infrastructure.”
