‘Oscars’ of business tranining

Dr Paul Phillips

An oscars-style awards ceremony honouring local businesses involved in the training of young people and employees is being hosted by Weston College next week.

The Excellence in Business Training Awards event, on Thursday June 14 at DoubleTree by Hilton Cadbury House, Congresbury, recognises partnerships forged between the College and businesses across North Somerset and beyond to deliver excellent training provision and the generation of jobs for young people.

The formal dinner and awards evening also showcases apprentices and students who have distinguished themselves during training.

Categories include ‘Business Employer of the Year’, ‘Care Learner of the Year’ and ‘Social Enterprise Employer of the Year’.

As well as the awards, nominees and invited guests will be treated to a three-course dinner and entertainment from College band Syren Blue.

Guest speaker is Graham Turner, Chief Executive of North Somerset Council. He serves as an Apprenticeship Ambassador for the National Apprenticeship Service and is a leading figure in public/private sector partnership working in North Somerset.

Weston College Principal and Chief Executive Dr Paul Phillips OBE will welcome guests and help to present the awards.

He said: “This evening recognises and reward many successes and achievements obtained as a result of investment in training.

“The College continues to expand the range of opportunities for the employers and students it serves.

“The variety of training we offer is growing and the combination of superb facilities, dedicated staff and robust management ensures we consistently deliver quality learning and development.”

A huge growth in the number of Apprenticeships has been seen at Weston College as young people look for alternatives in a tough job market.

Applications for Apprenticeships went up by 113 per cent at the College in 2011 and interest continues to build this year.

The College is the top facilitator of Apprenticeship programmes in the region and its Business and Enterprise Centre (BEC), based at the South West Skills Campus on Locking Road, Weston, was set up to provide businesses with relevant and flexible training programmes.

Businesses and organisations shortlisted for Weston College awards include Alliance Homes, Annagram Estate Agents, the British Institute for Brain Injured Children and the Restore Trust.
