CARGO, Bristol’s waterfront hub of shops, restaurants and cafes housed within converted shipping containers at Wapping Wharf, looks set to be expanded, if new plans get the go ahead.
Umberslade, the developer behind Wapping Wharf and CARGO, has submitted plans to add two new units – one made up of six 20ft by 8ft shipping containers and the other made up of three – to CARGO 2.
The new spaces will both have expansive terraces and will be located on top of CARGO 2 – one above butchers Meat Box and restaurant Squeezed, and the other above the adjacent storage space.

We’ve decided to expand CARGO to meet the huge demand we’ve received from businesses keen to become a part of this flourishing dockside community and we’ve have already had strong interest in these two new proposed units. However, we are still keen to hear from anyone who feels they can bring something exciting and complementary to the area.”
Wapping Wharf is ideally located in the heart of Bristol’s historical and cultural quarter, with its tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important connection between south Bristol to the city centre.
This popular waterfront neighbourhood is currently home to 40 independent businesses, over 30 of which are based within CARGO 1 and 2, representing some of the city’s best independent restaurants, shops and cafes. From a florist to a barber’s, and from a yoga studio to an art gallery, plus an incredible array of cuisines on offer, including fine dining, street food and more, Wapping Wharf has something for everyone.
The quarter also includes nearly 200 apartments, with works underway on phase two of the scheme, which will include over 330 additional homes.
The planning application for the extension to CARGO 2 has been submitted to Bristol City Council.
