Public spending on the UK’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is set to exceed more than £190bn, according to the latest HMRC figures.
The figures follow Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s announcement that a further £30bn of support will be introduced to help the UK economy during his’ Summer Budget’ on Wednesday.
According to the report, the new funding is worth nearly £3,000 per person in the UK – and more than the entire planned NHS budget for the current financial year.
Direct spending on the COVID-19 crisis, including the latest £30bn package, means that the government is currently spending £188.7bn – with the likelihood of it increasing over the coming weeks.
