S. Green and Sons’ Celebrates its centenary year

North London-based company, S. Green and Sons, is marking its 100th birthday as a leading sourcing agent, importer, wholesaler and distributor of home textiles and soft furnishings.

In 1922, 17-year-old Samuel Green borrowed £100 from his father and set himself up as a wholesale distributor in the East End of London. Whilst the business started as a one-man band, it quickly expanded and Samuel benefitted greatly from assistance from his wife Hetty and later his sons Gerald and Melvyn.

With expertise in accounting and economics respectively, his two sons were instrumental in the expansion of the firm. The appointment of Melvyn’s son Aron as a director of the business in 2008 brought the third generation into the business.

Aron Green addressed the team during the centennial celebrations: “When he returned from the First World War, my grandfather Sam’s sole focus was to make a living and put some food on the table for his family. He couldn’t possibly have envisioned at the time, that over 100 years later and three generations, we would still be going strong and going from strength to strength.

“The business has survived through wars, fires, numerous recessions, and scene changes in the retail and business landscape on more occasions than I choose to count. These past few years have been really unprecedented in the manner and speed of change that we’ve had to go through, and it’s only thanks to the hard work and dedication of each and every one of you that is here this evening.

“Our aim is to continue the development and the growth of the company in the years ahead and I hope that each and every one of you will continue with us on this journey and together we will fulfil the company’s true potential. Please eat, drink, be merry and don’t be late for work tomorrow!”

The business has come a long way in its 100 years, and whilst much has changed, it remains true to the values instilled by Samuel in the team.

As with many businesses around the world, the nature of business shifted dramatically during the 2020 Coronavirus lockdown. Changes in sales patterns that were predicted to happen over a five-year period happened over the course of five days.

The business used this opportunity to invest heavily in photography, as well as office and warehouse technology to further benefit the entire operation, from order processing to picking, packing and dispatching.

S. Green & Sons stocks a huge variety of home textile products, such as cushion covers, table cloths, bedding and curtains, with an extensive price range to suit all budgets. The company continues to supply to a vast array of sales outlets and other businesses, from shops and market traders to hotels and many others, both online and in-store.
