The outstanding achievements of Weston College students, staff and business associates were honoured at a gala ceremony.

The annual ‘Celebration of Success’ event, held at the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare, was a chance for the hundreds of guests attending to hear remarkable personal stories from across all sectors of the College.

Parents, friends and business guests were treated to a three-course meal and a performance of soul music by the College’s University Campus Big Band before the main ceremony began.

The event was hosted by Dr Paul Phillips, Weston College Principal and Chief Executive.

Guest speaker for the evening was Jim Eastwood, star of BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’ and now a Vice President of internet voucher firm Groupon.

Jim comments: “At Weston College we hear about growth, success, expansion, successful partnerships and celebration. Young people, you might not see all this going on, but it is happening to make Weston College the catalyst for change in this area and across the South West.

“You should be delighted at your achievements and at the partnerships being created here.”

One of the night a number of student success stories were revealed.

For Bill Humphries, winning the Pre-employment Training Student of the Year award was completely out of the blue.

Approaching 60, his life in Birmingham had become difficult and when he moved to Weston he was looking for a new start.

He comments:“Weston College has been life-changing. I had to start from scratch when I came here but the help I’ve had to get back into work has been unbelievable and six months after I started I got a job as Cleaning Manager at Tesco in Clevedon. I couldn’t be happier.”
