Time to create a goodness revolution through action not just conversation

Back in 2001, Pukka Herbs was co-founded by ethical entrepreneur Tim Westwell and practicing herbalist Sebastian Pole, who were determined to create a business centred on mutual benefit, for people, plants and the planet.

18 years on and the mission is still the same; bringing people closer to the incredible power of organic herbs in the most ethical and sustainable way possible.

Pukka’s mission applies to every area of our business, from marketing to sourcing, to donating to environmental causes globally, to innovating plastic-free and recyclable packaging and finding ways to reduce our carbon impact.

Whilst governments continue to deliver to the realm of short-term politics and are usually bound to their own geographies, businesses can lead the way, integrating profit and purpose together for the global long-term good. Whatever we may wish for, it’s a fact that consumerism continues to grow. Here are three ways we’d urge businesses to make a difference.

Become a B Corp

Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are working to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

As B Corps, we’re all assessed by completing the B Impact Assessment every three years, cementing our ongoing commitment to meet higher standards of transparency, accountability and performance. Our B Corp score is in the public domain and can be seen by anyone at any point.

I’ve recently been chairing the Council which means being actively involved by bringing new brands on board and also running campaigns. Most recently, we ran a ‘BCorp Month’ campaign, during which we collaborated as a collective of brands and worked with inspiring influencers to raise awareness of the BCorp certification amongst consumers, encouraging them to look for the logo.

Support 1% for the planet

1% for the planet brings together a global network of businesses, non-profits and individuals who contribute the equivalent of 1% of sales through a combination of monetary, in-kind, and advertising contributions. Funds raised go towards activity that promotes a healthy planet.

Pukka has contributed £1.5m since starting to support 1% in 2016. We’ve also sought out partnerships with other companies such as the Eden Project, Natural History Museum and Soil Association. We commit 10% of our annual marketing budget to promoting 1% partnership activity, demonstrating our commitment to the planet even in our marketing spend.

Create and run your own initiative

Instead of simply ticking off the corporate CSR box, by developing your own scheme you can run something that’s unique to your brand and lives up to your raison d’etre.
