Vauxhall set to axe over 240 jobs as staff walk out of Ellesmere Port factory

Hundreds of staff will lose their jobs at Vauxhall Motors’ Ellesmere Port Manufacturing Plant as the company has announced restructuring plans.

Staff were told in a meeting last week that 241 jobs are set to go in the new year as Vauxhall and parent company PSA Group battle falling sales.

The plant axed 400 jobs last year and another 250 earlier this year.

The company, which has insisted that Brexit is not a factor in this move, has said that the restructuring is critical to ensure that the Ellesmere Port plant develops its competitiveness during this difficult time within the industry.

The restructuring is necessary to make it a competitive plant when compared to the benchmark, the company explained.

This news follows events which took place on Friday which saw 1,000 staff, which were union members, walk out of Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port car plant in protest at the planned job cuts.

The company confirmed that it remains committed to achieve this essential restructuring without having to utilise compulsory redundancies.
