Weston College has announced that it will be expanding its partnership to train Wessex Water apprentices in 2019.

The College has 50 Wessex Water apprentices currently studying a range of programmes including engineering, administration support, IT and cybersecurity. In addition, Weston College has created bespoke residential accommodation for Electrical, Mechanical and Installation (EM&I) learners recruited by Wessex Water in September 2018.

The EM&I Apprentices are based in the College’s accommodation block, opposite the College’s Knightstone Campus, and will spend three days a week studying technical skills training in Weston-super-Mare in the first year of their course.

The College secured the contract after an extensive selection process. Since then, they have worked closely with Wessex Water to develop a tailored package of training.

Bespoke workshops have been created to Wessex Water’s requirements and include sector-specific training resources. The College has also developed a bespoke leadership programme called ‘Management Fundamentals’, which enables Wessex Water to ‘upskill’ their existing workforce.

Becca Thurston, Wessex Water’s Early Careers Manager, said: “We have worked closely with the college to understand our collective objective which is to create an outstanding apprenticeship training partnership that will support our plans to recruit new talent into our business. Since the contract was awarded, Weston College has provided relevant, business-led and, most importantly, effective training for our apprentices.”

Dave Crew, Weston College’s Head of Employer Partnership, said: “Weston College are delighted to have been selected to be an apprenticeship training partner by Wessex Water. Following our successful tender application, we have been working in partnership to create a bespoke apprenticeship training programme as Wessex Water invests in their workforce. We look forward to seeing many exciting employment and training opportunities created as a result of this partnership.”

In addition to Wessex Water, the College has also won new apprenticeship contracts in 2018 with Atkins, the UK Hydrographic Office, 2gether NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Bristol. Weston College were also recognised as the Apprenticeship Provider of the Year in April 2018 at the Bristol and Bath Apprenticeship Awards.
