Workers injured following ‘massive’ explosion at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot plant

Latest News | Manufacturing | Wales

Two workers at Tata Steel’s plant in Port Talbot have been injured following an explosion in the early hours of the morning.

A massive blast was heard by local residents at around 3:30am, and since then local residents have been posting images on social media, and even some home CCTV footage caught the blast.

Tata Steel have released a statement which revealed that the explosion came from a train used to carry molten metal and that the fires were now extinguished. All employees who were on site during the incident have been accounted for.

A Tata Steel representative said: “Two of our employees suffered minor injuries and both have been released following treatment. The spillage led to a number of fires which were extinguished by our own emergency services supported by members of the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service. We are currently investigating the cause of the incident and are looking to minimise any impact on production.”
