Mozilla announces growth plans for 2023 following 125% growth in 2021

The tech organisation is aiming to become a multi product company with new revenue streams and innovation

Mozilla has announced its latest company growth as well as ambitious plans for 2023 and beyond in a report announced last week.

Mozilla Corporation, the for-profit side of the overall Mozilla organisation, generated $585m (£487.4m) from its search partnerships, subscriptions, and ad revenue in 2021 — up 25% from the year before.

While the majority of the Corporation’s revenue continues to be generated from our global browser search partnerships, in 2021, Mozilla’s revenue from new product offerings grew 125% year on year to $57m (£47.5m).

Further to this, in 2021, Mozilla Foundation earned $30.2m (£25.2m) in revenue — including $3.6m (£3m) in donations from the public, $6.3m (£5.3m) from grants in addition to $20m (£16.7m) in revenue from the Corporation that was reinvested into the Foundation.

This past year, Mozilla’s overall assets also hit $1.2bn (£1bn), allowing the company to invest in new products and innovation. The company has also set out plans to ‘grow into a multi-product organisation with different business models.

Mitchell Baker, chief executive officer & chairwoman of Mozilla Foundation, comments, “When Mozilla started, the browser impacted all aspects of internet life and allowed Mozilla to have an impact and drive change across most internet-based activities.

“Today the browser remains powerful but is not a universal tool. So Mozilla Corporation needs to expand to multiple products, allowing for multiple options for customer audiences and business models.

“We’re experienced in representing consumer interests in the browser world. Going forward it’s time to build this knowledge with other products and additional business models.

“It’s time to bring our public benefit-driven mindset to products rich with machine learning and the power of new technologies.”
