Revolut was founded in 2015 by Nikolay Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko, two professionals from the banking world who sought to disrupt traditional financial services. Storonsky, born in Russia and educated in physics and economics, began his career as a trader at Lehman Brothers and later Credit Suisse. Frustrated by the high fees and inefficiency of cross-border transactions, he envisioned a more transparent, digital-first solution for global banking.
He joined forces with Vlad Yatsenko, a Ukrainian software engineer with extensive experience developing complex financial systems for Deutsche Bank, UBS and Credit Suisse. Combining Storonsky’s financial acumen with Yatsenko’s technical expertise, they launched Revolut as a mobile app offering multi-currency accounts, instant foreign exchange at interbank rates and fee-free international transfers.
Revolut’s user-centric design and rapid innovation quickly attracted attention from digital-native consumers seeking alternatives to traditional banks. The company expanded its offerings to include cryptocurrency trading, stock investing and business accounts, evolving into a comprehensive financial “super app”. Under Storonsky’s leadership as CEO and Yatsenko’s as CTO, Revolut has grown into one of Europe’s most valuable fintech startups, serving tens of millions of users globally. Their shared vision—to make financial services more accessible, affordable and borderless—continues to drive Revolut’s mission to redefine modern banking.
